Wolff Audio FREQ EQ – Sweepable 500 Series 4-Band Proportional Q
It is a highly flexible, extremely precise equalizer that delivers exceptional audio performance with any type of source. Designed by Paul Wolff, a prolific engineer with four decades of experience in equalizer design, and named FREQ by Terry Lewis, who was the first to adopt it, this product has a rich audio heritage. The FREQ possesses the desirable characteristics of classic proportional-Q equalizers, with the characteristic wide Q that narrows as you boost or cut. Paul took it a step further. Instead of stopping at one octave, he added 1/3-octave capability. This makes it possible to perform a narrow cut with the same EQ.
The front-panel controls, together with the proportional Q control, provide all the gain controls.
The less extreme equalizer settings have a wide bandwidth, while the more extreme ones have a narrow bandwidth to eliminate ringing issues. The HIGH and LOW bands feature an additional WIDE mode that adjusts the Q to a fixed 3-octave-wide filter without the infinite frequency response of a typical shelving equalizer. Since the WIDE mode gradually tapers off at the ends of the passband, this prevents out-of-band frequencies from causing clipping in the HF and LF ranges.
The two MID bands include a 1/3-octave bandpass filter that allows you to surgically cut problematic frequencies with narrower cut-off settings than would normally be possible in proportional Q mode. Regardless of the mode you use, the FREQ is designed to optimize your musical sound.
The FREQ features a custom Cinemag nickel-and-steel output transformer, the preferred choice for transparency without coloration.
