The RefPre is designed to be extremely transparent. You hear the microphone, not the preamp.
The RefPre reference preamplifier from the 500 Series stands out for what it doesn’t do. It won’t color your sound. Never, ever. Its transparent design uses minimal circuitry and signal paths.
If exceptional precision and greater headroom to handle a variety of microphone types—including high-output and ribbon microphones—are among your “must-haves” for a preamp, this preamp will be the perfect choice for you.
It also includes a switchable +10 dB gain boost and a phantom power safety lock for the tapes.
Designed as an option for the Wolff Console, the RefPre features 60 dB of gain, phantom power, switchable polarity, and a source selector for the front-panel XLR/INST input. Selecting the ribbon microphone option increases the gain to 70 dB and adjusts the microphone’s impedance. The RefPre is ideal for sampling and emulation microphones, such as the Slate VMS, which require a completely transparent preamp. Pairing it with Earthworks TC25 microphones for toms and kick drums and PM40 microphones for piano yields exceptional results, as does pairing it with the Neumann TLM 103 to add a noticeable presence.
